We want to make everyone’s stay as enjoyable as possible, and are committed to providing suitable access for all our guests, whatever their individual needs.
We aim to accurately describe our facilities and services to give you the confidence to book the right cottage for your specific requirements.
We have two cottages, Byre and Wheelhouse rated by VisitEngland under the National Accessible Scheme Mobility 1.
Keld Head Farm Cottages are a group of nine stone built cottages set around a picturesque courtyard with large gardens. They are only twenty minutes walk from the centre of town along a footpath. There is a large car park, allowing for easy access to all of the cottages. The whole site is level with no inclines and very few steps.
Mill and Granary cottages are two storeys with internal staircases to one double and one twin bedroom and bathroom. The bathroom has a bath with a shower over.
Barn Cottage has two ground floor bedrooms, one double/one twin and a bathroom with bath and shower over. It is two storey with an internal staircase and a door at the top to the lounge and dining area, the kitchen and an external stone staircase to the courtyard.
Pasture View is single storey and sleeps eight guests in two twin bedrooms and two king size bedrooms. It has a family bathroom with bath and shower over. There is also an en-suite toilet & shower room with a corner shower cubicle. The lounge, dining room and kitchen are open plan enabling easy access. It has it’s own level garden and garden furniture.
Stables is single storey and sleeps seven guests in one king size bedroom, one bunk bedroom and one family room (one double and one single bed). The bathroom has a bath with shower over. There is also a seperate toilet and washroom. It is accessed from the car park through a covered walkway into the courtyard and a short distance along a paved path. There is one step up into the cottage, for which a ramp can be supplied.
The Smithy is single storey and sleeps two guests. The lounge, dining room and kitchen are open plan enabling easy access. The bathroom has a bath with shower over with side transfer possible to the toilet. The bed can be a super king size or two singles. It has it’s own level garden and garden furniture.
Pigeon Cote is single storey and sleeps five guests in one double four poster with head and foot board and one family room (one double and one single bed.) The bathroom has a bath with a shower over. It is accessed from the car park through a covered walkway into the courtyard and a short distance along a paved path. There is one step up into the cottage, for which a ramp can be supplied.
The Garden House is accessed across the lawn and has one step onto the decking.
We can provide cots, high chairs, bed guards, fireguards, baby monitors, toilet frames, non-slip shower mats and waterproof mattress covers. A commode and Wheelchair can be supplied if pre-arranged.
Accessibility Guide for Byre and Wheelhouse Cottages Only
Each cottage sleeps five guests with a four poster double bedroom, a family room with a single and double bed, sitting room, bathroom and dining kitchen.
Level Access
• The main entrance has level access with a ramp. The ramp is non permanent.
• There is level access from the main entrance to:– Family Bedroom and Double bedroom– Lounge– Bathroom– Kitchen
Access to Communal Garden
• There is level access from the main entrance to:– Communal Garden– Car Park
Bedrooms
• There is ample access around beds.
Level access bedrooms
• The route to the bedroom is 750mm wide Byre Cottage, 645mm wide Wheelhouse Cottage or more.
• The bedroom door is 710mm wide Byre Cottage, 645mm Wheelhouse Cottage..
• There is unobstructed floor space 1200mm by 900mm, or more.
Hearing
• The TV in the Lounge has an option for subtitles.
Visual
• The walls and the doors have high colour contrast.
General
The accommodation is rated by the National Accessible Scheme as suitable for:
• Older and less mobile guest
• Staff are available 24 hours a day.
• We have emergency evacuation procedures for disabled visitors.
Parking
• We have a car park. There are accessible parking spaces. The parking is less than 50 metres from the main entrance. Parking is free.
• There is a drop-off point at the main entrance to Byre Cottage for ease of unloading and loading and a reserved parking space in the car park
• For Wheelhouse Cottage the parking is less than 3 metres from the main entrance and a reserved parking space in the car park Parking is free.
• From the car park to the entrance, there is level access.
• There are ample parking spaces for each Cottage with room for unloading and maneuvering. Path to main entrance
• The path is 610mm wide, or more.
• The path is level stone paving slabs
Main entrance
• The main entrance has ramped access.
• There is a non-permanent ramp.
• The main door is side hung and manual.
• The door is 785mm wide Byre Cottage & 760mm wide Wheelhouse Cottage.
• When you arrive, we can help carry your luggage.

Visual Impairment – General Information
• We have high colour contrast between walls and doorframes.
Bedrooms
• All bedrooms have windows.
• Bedrooms have ceiling lights, bedside lamps and natural daylight.
• All bedrooms are non-smoking.
• We can move the bedroom furniture, to improve accessibility.
Accessible bedroom Family bedroom
• The route to the bedroom is 860mm wide, or more. The bedroom door is 700mm wide Byre Cottage & 640mm wide Wheelhouse Cottage. There is
800mm at the side of the bed. The bed is 600mm high.
Accessible bedroom Double Bedroom
• The route to the bedroom is 860mm wide, or more. The bedroom door is 700mm wide Byre Cottage & 640mm wide Wheelhouse Cottage. There is
800mm at the side of the bed. The bed is 590mm high.
Accessible Bathroom Byre Cottage only
• The bathroom is separate. It is not an en-suite.
• The bathroom door is 700mm wide.
• The bathroom has a bath with an overhead shower. The shower has a handrail. The direction of transfer is to the front only. There is 2300mm in front of
the toilet. The toilet seat is 400mm high.
• The basin is 760mm high. The taps are lever operated. There is space under the basin.
• The bath edge is 530mm from the floor.
• Non slip bath mat for use in the bath
Accessible Bathroom Wheelhouse Cottage only
• The bathroom is not en-suite.
• The bathroom door is 640mm wide.
• The bathroom has an over the bath shower.
• The toilet has handrails.
• There is 1500mm in front of the toilet. The toilet seat is 430mm high.
• The taps are lever operated. There is space under the basin.
• The basin is 760mm high.
• The bath edge is 530mm from the floor.
• Non slip bath mat for use in the bath
Kitchen
• We have an open plan kitchen.
• From the main entrance to the kitchen, there is level access.
• The route is 700mm wide, or more.
• The door is 700mm wide.
• The hob is at a height 910mm
• The sink is at a height 910mm.
• The table and plates have colour contrast.
Lounge
• From the main entrance to the lounge, there is level access. The route is 700mm wide or more. The
door is 700mm wide Byre Cottage & 760mm wide Wheelhouse Cottage,
• The lounge area is open plan. There are two sofas, seat 450mm from floor and an armchair, seat 450mm from floor.
Getting Around Outside
Communal Garden
• From the main entrance to the gardens, there is a non-permanent ramp. Lawn Area
• From the main entrance to the gardens, there is level access.
Decking Area and Summerhouse
• From the main entrance to this area, there is level access across grass..
• To get onto the decking, there is a small step.
Accessibility equipment
• We can supply various aides such as toilet frames, bathroom perching stool etc.
• We have space to charge mobility scooters and battery powered wheelchairs.
Emergency evacuation procedures
• We have emergency evacuation procedures for all our visitors.
Customer care support
• Staff are available 24 hours a day.
• Guest information files in Byre Cottage give details of local services and emergency procedures. Mobile phone reception is variable
depending on your network. A payphone is provided for guest use in onsite telephone box outside Byre cottage.
